I managed to find Ted's just because I was driving around town and decided a coney sounded kind of good for lunch... This was a total crap shoot - I figured I'd either score big or die tryin'. So the verdict is.... Meh, it was good - Wasn't great tho. Another example of one small misstep made ruined what probably could have been great. I ordered the coney with cheese basket. Not a bad bargain at around $6.00 for a basket including one coney, a side of cole slaw, a side of fries, AND a side of onion rings. Lot's of food. The fries and onion rings were scorching hot (yay!) and the slaw was actually quite good - and cold (yay!). Really, I was happy as I dug into my sides. Then I double-fisted my coney and bit down... Bah! Luke warm chili! Suddenly my high expectations were dashed like flotsam against the rocks in a hurricane. It was good, but could have been so much more. I'll go back to Ted's - It is a good for a Saturday afternoon lunch. But I'll have tempered expectations and I'll probably ask that my chili actually be HOT. Pluses: Cold sides were cold , and tasty. Hot sides were hot, and tasty. Served quickly. Clean. Minuses: Chili wasn't hot. No Coke, Pepsi.

I'd almost go back to Des Moines to eat at Ted's Coney Island and Tasty Tacos alone.... I really never stray from the Gyros - no reason to when you've got a good thing going. I stop here every time I go back to Des Moines to visit friends. The West Des Moines location is great as well - got a nice, clean atmosphere - definately family friendly - a couple flat screens on the walls and the same great food and service I've come to expect.

Preface: From what the other reviewers wrote about this joint, I thought I was walking into a greasy college lounge. Overall, I'd give the food a mediocre score. I had the tenderloin. It gets 2 stars because the food was cooked and warm, but it lacked flavor. It's the usual Midwestern "tone it down" style, but they should offer the option of spicy when food is ordered with Chili. (What is up with this? Did spices all of a sudden forgot to get dropped off in the Midwest?) The sides on the basket were Coleslaw, fries and Orion rings. I 'd have to disagree with other reviews on the sides. I think I've had high school cafeterias (in California) serving better sides than that. So no, I didn't stuff it down like I did when I was in high school, college, or last week after the hangover event. Good points: I was pleasantly surprised to find the floor so clean for a college spot. I'm sure Ted's gets brownie points for cleanliness and friendly service. I noticed many soccer moms making a lunch stop that day with their troops. Overall, I would not return to Ted's for another try. I think while trying to sanitize the "college dorm food" scene, Ted tried a little too hard and sterilized it. Well, at least I am confident that I won't be doing the uppers or downers at the porcelain bowl later tonight. This could also be the reason why I saw so many returning AARP customers.

Excellent authentic gyros! A great value and great service.

Awwww... yeah! Ted's may have some of the best damned gyros that I have ever had the pleasure to eat. I remember I used to go to Olympic Flame all of the time, and one time, I decided to give Ted's a shot (I think there was snow involved and there was most certainly hunger) as I didn't feel like driving the, what, mile or so? to get to OF. So Ted's it was, grab-and-go style. I think I got as far as the sidewalk before I was overwhelmed by the intoxicating, crisp, slightly greasy aroma of the fries. I mean, you could just tell how good these suckers were gonna be by the smell of them. And they were curly fries, man. CURLY fires. My favorite. I took a bite of one and I was hooked. I pulled back in to the front of the restaurant, parked, took a sip of soda, and dove in. Fries.... oh yeah. Gyro, oh my god. Another swig of soda and I went to town. You would have thought I was having a severe attack of the munchies the way I tore though that food, relishing each and every reeking bite with gusto. When I was done, there were a few crumbs in the bag and greasy, messy papers everywhere. I was blissed out. Tedddddd's. This summer, i went back home to visit and went with my mom and her best friend. It was all still the same, 'cept the curly fries lost their curl. Straight or no, they were awesome. So was the gyro. Ah, Des Moines. Sometimes you astound me. Just go already. Note: sit in to eat and you will, I promise you, smell like a gyro by the time you leave. Just sayin'.

Good place to grab lunch! If you in the mood for a gyro sandwich and some hot fries, this is the place! I enjoyed it!

Just moved to DM and ate here for the first time with coworkers. Had a delicious gyro with feta which was super moist, great tzatsiki, and filling. Tried the sides off a friend's plate and the onion rings were fantastic. It was packed to the rafters and it took awhile to get food, but totally worth the wait!

I was wavering between 4 and 5 stars and then I thought of Ted's Gyros, and I just had to do it...5 stars for sure. I go to Ted's all the time because it's good food and it's between work and home. Plus they have a drive through God love em. My husband and I often think Tues night is Ted's night. I have been to Greece twice, and frankly Ted's does gyro's better. Really. Last time we went, after arriving home the first place we ate was Ted's just to make sure, and sure enough....Ted's had Athens and Santorini beat! Now, that said, I don't know much else about the menu because I don't swerve much from gyros. I do get the Greek salad with Gyro meat and that is good too, although they have lessened the influence of tomatoes in the salad - two small cherry tomatoes does not a Greek salad make. I also don't go in for fried stuff so I can't comment on the fires, onion rings or tenderloins. That's okay though, because then I can occasionally have some of their baklava! Ted's never leave Ingersoll, we love you.

Whenever I have been away from Des Moines from prolonged periods of time this the first place I go after getting in at the airport. Gyros are amazing and this is about the only place in Des Moines I think you can get falafel.
(5)D. T.
seriously? this place is amazing. it's a little greasy wonder.... best gyros i've ever ever ever had. and in des moines, iowa...who knew?! their vegetarian wrap is also incredible. my pop is from des moines and used to live there.... so every single time i would visit, i would hit up ted's.... like multiple times per visit. incredible.

I stopped by with a craving for a milkshake this summer. The name made me think of frozen treats! Nope, no milk shake. Maybe in the future...
(3)Brooke P.
Ted's has been around forever! Love the onion rings and gyros! Greek salads and tenderloins are also pretty tasty. Great customer service.
(4)He And She I.
I marvel at the way they wrap the gyros at Ted's...you can actually eat the sandwich without everything falling out. The meat, however, is WAY too salty. Next time, I might try it veggie style, to see if I can get the same great taste without the heavy salt. And, a little too much oregano on the feta fries. If it had been fresh oregano, maybe it wouldn't have haunted me for two hours. Final tally...better onion rings than George's, but chili not as good as George's. Clean, well-lighted and pleasant atmosphere...worth a stop if you're hungry.

Great gyros and hot dogs. The tzaziki sauce on the gyros is quite good. Love that that baskets come with a variety of sides- fries, onion rings, and cole slaw all together for a decent price. Would love to try the falafel's one of these days.

Gyros have been a favorite food of mine for the last 30 years. I would have one at least once a week while living in Chicago. I've had them from the small local hot dog places in the neighborhood and from the Greek restaurants in Greek town in Chicago. So I'm pretty dialed in to what I expect from a Gyros. After being transferred to Iowa I found that most of the foods that I was used to just wasn't here. Or not here in what I would consider an edible form. One of those foods was the Gyros. Most people that I spoke with didn't even know what it was, let alone where I could find a restaurant that sold a good one. Then I found Ted's Coney Island. The Gyros here is what I was accustom to in Chicago. The meat was cut from a spit. Served on a pita with the onions, tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. Yes, it's just that simple. Yet some places manage to miss the mark on making them. Not Ted's. From what I hear they also serve other food. None of which I've tried there except for some of the side items. Onion rings, fries, and coleslaw. I wasn't impressed with any of the sides. I'm not sure what is going on with the onion rings, but to me they just seem to be a giant mess of grease. The coleslaw seems to be tasteless and a bit oily. And the fries are nothing to write home about either. But this doesn't stop me from heading there every so often for a Gyros when the urge hits me.

I go to this place every other week or so. I am writing this review from a vegetarian's perspective because, I am one! They have 2 options for vegetarians here that all come in a basket. I most often get the veggie pita wrap but get the hummus pita sometime. You can get it all in a basket for around $7 which includes fries, onion rings, coleslaw - a great deal! Nice little locally owned spot and the service is always fast and good. Plus, it is in an old A-Frame building which is novelty enough for me.
(4)Jed N.
First time here. Took advice from other reviewers and had the gyro basket. Delicious gyro! Onion rings are skinny cut and fries are nothing special. As for the coleslaw, I've eaten many variations of slaw and Ted's is chopped cabbage with a little chopped carrot, creamy but is FAR more vinegar than sweet. NOTE: maybe i missed this in other reviews, but drinks are extra - not included with basket. Overall a good meal, but a bit spendy at $22 for 2 gyro baskets and drinks. I'll be back to try coney. Very clean and updated. Alot of windows letting in plenty of light. Fast friendly service. BONUS points for Sirius/XM playing The Chill station over sound system. Excellent!
(4)Myke C.
I've eaten here about 5 times and I really enjoy it. The service is great, the dining area is always clean, and then prices are reasonable. I get the Coney Dog which comes with fries, onion rings, and coleslaw. All it was made fresh (besides the coleslaw) and tasted great. I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a no-frills, quick meal.
(5)Adam L.
Ted's Coney Island has some pretty good food. I have lived in the area for about 10 years and never made it here until recently, I was missing out. We tried the gyro and a pork tenderloin both were very tasty. I love the sides in the basket, fries, onion rings, and coleslaw. More places need to offer multiple sides in a basket. It is a pretty laid back place, very friendly staff, will be going back here to try other things.
(4)Craig Z.
Good food and large portions. Staff is friendly and very attentive to keeping the tables clean. Wait time was also short. I'll be back for sure!
(5)Brett B.
A great place to stop before heading to the airport. They open at 10:30 and offer great food with friendly service. The only thing which prevented five starts is the restroom. I samples the Gyros and a coney dog, both were delicious.
(4)Terri M.
So! I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Kreg and I ended up here for dinner before a Mellencamp concert cuz we just couldn't decide. We were going to Zombie Burger, but the wait was too long. Wasabi Tao is closed on Sunday's. So we ended up at Ted's. I had a gyro. It was really good. I wasn't expecting much, but it was flavorful, well seasoned and the tzatziki was delicious. As some have mentioned, the place has a fast food feel for sure, but don't let that fool you. Have a gyro! Opah! Will definitely give this place a try again!

All the times I have ever been to NYC, I have always thought well I should go out to Coney Island and see it.. Cause I love that kinda classic old run down stuff you have seen in photos so many times! Sadly Coney Island is just a bit to far of a train ride from Manhattan and there is plenty to do in the city! Lucky for me, Des Moines has it's own Coney Island, thanks to Ted! The restaurant has a strange slightly fast food diner design with a sliver ceiling that makes you feel like your in an old cable car train or something. It's cool! The staff was super nice and explained that I could get a falafel sandwich without the sauce to make it vegan! Sweet! I did, and the falafel was amazing, as was the pita. It also had two tomato slices and some shredded lettuce! They have a drive thru and plenty of other things on the menu, most notably hot dogs, chili, burgers, fries, onion rings! For the price next time I would choose a gyro basket. The bathrooms are bit run down and old, and have seen better days, but then again so has the Cyclone roller coaster at the real Coney Island. I will be back for sure!
(4)K W.
Oh the Gyros I could live off of them!! I order mine with extra meat, and am always totally full! They have some specials, but I feel there always special. Well worth the money!!! Come here quite often, maybe should take stock in them!!!
(5)Tony G.
Love this place. Great gyros and coney dogs. Always friendly service and quality food. My wife is vegan and they remember us most of the time and let us know if their pittas have milk in them. Drive thru is handy and I usually drive thru on my way home from work. Very diverse menu from falafel to Chicago dogs to gyros. Great local place. A+

After having an awesome time at the Yelp event at A-Dong, my fiance and I decided to grab some food from here after hearing Yelpers tell us great things about the place. We went through the drive thru because we wanted to see how efficient they were and if it would be practical for getting food in a hurry. I got the Gyro basket which comes with fries, onion rings, and coleslaw. My fiance got the Coney Dog and we got some Baklava for dessert. The wait was not long at all and would definitely recommend this drive thru for grabbing food in a hurry. The Gyro was great! It is not the best I've had in town, but definitely one of the better ones I had. The fries and coleslaw were very tasty, however I was not a fan of the onion rings. The Coney dog is standard, no problems at all with flavorful. The Baklava was very good. I have not had authentic Baklava so I'm not sure how it is suppose to taste. I want to thank fellow Yelpers for introducing me to this place! Can't wait to go and eat in one day!
(5)Jennifer H.
Ate dinner there last night. I had the Gyro Plate with fries and onion rings. So good. The gyro meat is seasoned just right. The fries were hot and thin style, which I love. Onion rings are ok. Cole slaw is nothing to write home about. The restaurant itself is kind of old looking, but the food is great! Staff very nice and food came out fast. Over 9.00 for gyro meat, sauce, onions and tomato slices with side of fries, onion rings and cole slaw seemed a little high, but I still pay it!

Ted is the way to go if you want a quick meal that isn't chain. I been here a few times and enjoyed it each time with a few different items tried. The Chicago dog is really good, has all the fixings and flavor you would expect out of Chi town. Real deal on this one, I believe they use the popular Chicago brand of hot dog as well. The gyros are good, they did a great job on these. One of the best options in town if this is your thing. The cheeseburger was alright, nothing too special. Try it if you want a change of pace from fast food. Overall nice place to go eat if you want quick food and want something local for fast food.
(3)Sami V.
Awesome Greek salad even without feta. Staff has always been very vegan-helpful. For instance, once they got a vegan pita bread in while I was there and they remembered me and offered to put my Salad in a pita. Always friendly, always fresh falafel. My husband likes the meat gyro too.
(5)Ashley T.
TCI gets the 4th star because it is locally owned and has a drive-thru option with vegan food. Can get a falafel gyro without the sauce for my vegan husband. For me, I got the falafel with sauce and it was delicious. A convenient, hot and tasty sandwich. And, even though it was filling, I was a little sad it was on the small side. Should have gone with the basket!
(4)YourDad D.
The best. Anti-fast food, fast-food. Ppl who enjoy Greek Food love that section of the menu. I never have to shy away from Chicago Dog or beefburger basket. Because they are so good. If you had a bad experience here (which would be rare), give it another shot or two. You'll find your groove here. The fries and rings are both prob the best on Ingersoll and surround areas. If you like your rings/ fries crispy like me...tell them. They will hook you up. The staff is very friendly and they def take good care of their regulars.
(5)Heath E.
Combo Greek/American cuisine. Can't go wrong with anything that has gyro meat or their coney's. Prompt drive through service & fair prices. An Ingersoll staple for many years.
(4)Sarah H.
We liked eating here, plenty to eat for under$10, if you get a basket. Much is to be desired about the decor, but the staff was very friendly and helpful! You can tell the gal behind the counter likes her job! This makes for a more enjoyable place to eat when the workers care, are having fun and getting the job done right!
(4)Whitneh S.
If you want to eat pure fried lard this is the place to go they have good gyros but other than that It's not all that
(3)Aidan C.
At first, when I went here, I didn't know how to feel, but every single time I eat here, I love it more and more every time. It is a multi cultural combo of traditional Greek cuisine and classic American cooking. Great place.
(5)Laura L.
This place is all right for a quick, cheap-ish lunch. Chicken gyro was pretty good. Meat was tender, and the tzatziki sauce was great even though I'm usually not a fan. The Hamburger Coney was interesting: thin burger patties on a hot dog bun, topped with chili and a pickle spear. Boyfriend seemed to like it; I wasn't impressed. Fries and cole slaw were good, but the onion rings were totally meh. I'm no expert in baklava, but it was as chewy and syrupy as I expected. The hulking roof is so strange-looking from the outside, but I love the retro decor within.
(3)Alakea K.
I was upset that I paid so much for a hotdog that I could have made at home. The cashier told me it was big so I was expecting a longer hotdog or a bigger hotdog! And then I started eating and the ground-beef was still raw! Its not that hard to cook ground beef you guys. I also asked for my cheese on the side thinking it would be shredded....no! it was a slice of cheese and my food wasn't even hot enough to melt it! I'm never going back. I don't know how they are still in business because their food is so basic. Maid-Rite makes better food and DairyZone or Sonic or DairyQueen has better hotdogs. Save your money!
(1)Don F.
I enjoy going to Teds and normally I get the gyro basket. The gyro is good but the fries are a little limp and taste like they have been cooked in old grease. So stay away from the fries and enjoy the gyro. The coonie island dogs are pretty decent to
